Covenant of Salt?
September 27, 2026 – 3:02 amIs salt from the ocean a missing ingredient from our diets? Does the Covenant of Salt point to an obscure solution to many health issues today?
Leviticus 2:13 commands Israel to season every grain offering with salt and never leave out “the salt of the covenant of your God.” It ends by saying that salt was to accompany all their offerings.
Salt preserves food and adds flavor. In this verse, it serves as a reminder that Israel’s worship was bound to God’s enduring covenant. The offering was more than a gift placed on the altar; it was given within a continuing relationship with Him.
The phrase “salt of the covenant” points especially to faithfulness and permanence. Numbers 18:19 also uses “covenant of salt” when describing an enduring provision from God. The verse does not say that salt itself made an offering acceptable. Israel was to bring its offerings as God instructed, with hearts faithful to Him.
The practical question is: Am I offering God something outwardly while neglecting faithfulness to Him in daily life? Leviticus 2:13 joins the act of giving to the covenant relationship behind it.
