Don’t Be Deceived!

True prophecy calls people to align with FATHER’S Master Plan!

When we stand on a Prophetic Word, we align ourselves with FATHER’S Master Plan.  Prophecy is about transformation. It also warns when they don’t align and it reassures them that He is working out a purposeful plan.

Discerning true vs. false prophecy in the Bible isn’t meant to be mysterious—it’s something believers are expected to test carefully. Scripture gives multiple “filters” rather than just one test. When you put them together, a clear pattern emerges.

Does it align with God’s revealed Word?  God does not contradict Himself. Any prophecy that conflicts with established Scripture is false—no matter how impressive it sounds.

Moses recorded by The Holy Spirit in Deuteronomy chapter 13:

1 “If there arises among you a prophet or a dreamer of dreams, and he gives you a sign or a wonder,

2 and the sign or the wonder comes to pass, of which he spoke to you, saying, ‘Let us go after other gods’-which you have not known-‘and let us serve them,’

3 you shall not listen to the words of that prophet or that dreamer of dreams, for the LORD your God is testing you to know whether you Love the LORD Your God with all your heart and with all your soul.

False prophets will entice your soul and body in some manner.  We have been forewarned.

4 You shall walk after the LORD your God and fear Him, and keep His commandments and obey His Voice; you shall serve Him and hold fast to Him.

We must keep our focus on being led by The Holy Spirit and discern the legitimacy of any prophetic word given.

Paul also warned us as he wrote by The Holy Spirit in Galatians chapter 1:

8 But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach a gospel different than the one we preached to you, let them be under God’s curse!

9 Let me make it clear: Anyone, no matter who they are, that brings you a different gospel than the Gospel that you have received, let them be condemned and cursed!

What is the first and most important test?  Does it come true? (with an important nuance)

Moses also recorded by The Holy Spirit in Deuteronomy chapter 18:

22 when a prophet speaks in the Name of the LORD, if the thing does not happen or come to pass, that is the thing which the LORD has not spoken; the prophet has spoken it presumptuously; you shall not be afraid of him.

However, not all true prophecies are unconditional.

Some prophecies are warnings meant to provoke repentance (see Jonah and Nineveh). When people repent, judgment may not come.  The prophecy is false if it fails outright, but delay or change doesn’t always mean false if the prophecy was conditional.

Another test: What fruit does it produce?

Jesus gave a very practical test as He spoke in Matthew chapter 7:

15 “Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravenous wolves.

16 You will know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes from thornbushes or figs from thistles?

17 Even so, every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit.

18 A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a bad tree bear good fruit.

19 Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.

20 Therefore by their fruits you will know them.

We should ask, does it lead people toward Holiness, repentance, and Truth?  Or toward fear, pride, division, or obsession with the sensational?  True prophecy draws people closer to God—not to the personality of the prophet.

Does the prophecy exalt Christ?

The Beloved Disciple recorded by The Holy Spirit in 1st John chapter 4:

1 Delightfully Loved friends, don’t trust every spirit, but carefully examine what they say to determine if they are of God, because many false prophets have mingled into the world.

2 Here’s the test for those with the genuine Spirit of God: they will confess Jesus as the Christ who has come in the flesh.

3 Everyone who does not acknowledge that Jesus is from God has the spirit of antichrist, which you heard was coming and is already active in the world.

We are to test the spirits, true prophecy acknowledges and aligns with Christ.  In practice, it upholds Who Christ is and what He taught and, it doesn’t distort the Gospel or shift focus away from Him.

We must also consider what the character of the person is.  While no one is perfect, Scripture still ties credibility to character.  Jeremiah and Ezekiel both confront prophets who spoke from selfish motives or imagination.  Patterns like greed, manipulation, or immorality are major warning signs.

Does the prophecy edify (build up), not just predict?

Paul wrote by The Holy Spirit in 1st Corinthians chapter 14:

3 But he who prophesies speaks edification and exhortation and comfort to men.

If a “prophecy” is purely sensational, fear-driven, or focused on dates/timelines with no spiritual benefit, it’s missing the core Biblical purpose.

Paul also wrote by The Holy Spirit in 1st Thessalonians chapter 5:

19 Never restrain or put out the fire of the Holy Spirit.

20 And don’t be one who scorns prophecies,

21 but be faithful to examine them by putting them to the test, and afterward hold tightly to what has proven to be right.

Biblically, prophecy is not meant to operate in isolation. Mature believers and leaders weigh it together.

Simply, a true prophecy will consistently:

Agree with Scripture

Point to Christ

Produce good spiritual fruit

Stand up to testing over time

A false one will usually fail in one or more of those areas—and often more than one.  Don’t be deceived in these final days!
