Another Kids In Need Update

When people hear about the Village Program, they often assume it is simply a mentoring initiative. While strong relationships are at the heart of the program, its purpose reaches much further. The Village exists to identify barriers that keep students from succeeding and to ensure those barriers do not define a student’s future.

Every day, our Village teachers invest in students by listening, encouraging, and building trust. Because they know their students well, they are often the first to recognize when a family is struggling financially, when a student is carrying adult responsibilities at home, or when basic necessities are standing in the way of learning. Those relationships allow us to respond before small challenges become overwhelming obstacles.

For some students, the greatest challenge is financial. The Village Program has quietly stepped in to help students participate in school activities they otherwise could not afford. Whether assisting with fees, clothing, or other unexpected expenses, the goal is simple: no student should miss opportunities because of financial hardship.

Other students face a different reality. Many work evenings and weekends, not just for spending money, but because their income helps pay household bills or provides food for their families. These students balance school with responsibilities well beyond what most teenagers experience. Through the Village Program, they have adults who understand those pressures, encourage them to stay focused on graduation, and connect them with resources when additional support is needed.

One of the most significant needs we continue to encounter is food insecurity. Thanks to the generosity of Servias Ministries, students have access to our campus food pantry, grocery gift cards, and, most recently, donations of beef, chicken, and lamb. These resources have provided meals for families during difficult seasons and have eased burdens that many people never see. For some students, these donations meant having nutritious food at home when there otherwise may not have been enough.

The partnership with Servias Ministries also allows our Village mentors to respond immediately when a student needs clothing, shoes, hygiene products, or other essentials. Rather than asking teachers to personally cover these expenses, donated gift cards provide a practical way to meet needs quickly and respectfully. Often, these quiet acts of kindness make a lasting difference in a student’s confidence and sense of belonging.

The success of the Village Program is not measured by the number of gift cards distributed or pounds of food donated. It is measured by students who remain engaged in school, families who receive help during difficult times, and young people who know someone believes in them. Every conversation, every meal, every pair of shoes, and every encouraging word sends the same message: you matter.

None of this would be possible without the compassion of our Village teachers and the extraordinary generosity of Servias Ministries. Their partnership has allowed Bethany Public Schools to care for students in ways that extend well beyond the classroom. Together, they are helping ensure that every child has not only the opportunity to succeed academically but also the support, dignity, and encouragement needed to thrive.
