Our relationship with The Holy Spirit is vital to our maturity!
In 1st Corinthians chapter 2:7–14, Paul explains a major spiritual principle: God’s Truth cannot be fully understood by human intelligence alone. It must be revealed by the Holy Spirit.
The passage presents three Truths: God’s hidden Wisdom, revelation by the Spirit, and the difference between the natural and spiritual person.
In Verse 7 — “We speak the Wisdom of God in a mystery”
“But we speak the Wisdom of God in a mystery, even the hidden Wisdom, which God ordained before the world unto our glory.”
“Mystery” does not mean something impossible to understand. In the New Testament, a mystery is something previously hidden that God has now revealed. The central mystery is God’s plan of salvation through Christ—especially Christ crucified.
Human wisdom would never have invented God’s plan: the Messiah would conquer through suffering, defeat death by dying, and bring sinful people into fellowship with God.
FATHER’S plan existed “before the world.” The cross was not God’s emergency response. Redemption was part of God’s Eternal purpose.
Verse 8 — The rulers did not understand it
“Which none of the princes of this world knew: for had they known it, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory.”
The people responsible for crucifying Jesus believed they were eliminating Him. In reality, their actions became part of the means through which God accomplished salvation.
This is one of the great paradoxes of Scripture:
What looked like Satan’s victory became his defeat.
What looked like Christ’s defeat became Christ’s triumph.
What looked like death became the doorway to Eternal Life.
They could see Jesus physically, but they did not understand who He truly was or what God was accomplishing through Him.
Verse 9 — “Eye hath not seen…”
“Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that Love Him.”
Human observation, human reasoning, and human imagination cannot discover the things God has prepared and accomplished in Christ.
Notice the three human avenues:
Eye → what we can observe
Ear → what we can learn from others
Heart/mind → what we can imagine or reason out
None of these by themselves can discover the depths of God’s purposes.
But Paul does not stop at verse 9. Verse 10 is crucial.
Verse 10 — “But God hath revealed them unto us”
“But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit.”
This changes the meaning dramatically. Paul isn’t simply saying: “Nobody can know the things of God.” Instead, he is saying:
“Human beings cannot discover them on their own—but God reveals them through His Spirit.”
That is the difference between merely having information about God and receiving Spiritual understanding from God.
The Holy Spirit “searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God.”
The Spirit knows God’s purposes perfectly and makes God’s Truth understandable to believers.
Verse 11 — The Spirit knows the Mind of God
Paul gives us an analogy. Only your own spirit truly knows what is going on inside you unless you reveal it. Likewise: “the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God.”
The Holy Spirit isn’t guessing what God thinks, He knows the Mind of God because the Spirit is God.
Therefore, if we want to understand God’s heart, character, purposes, and Word, we need the Holy Spirit.
Verse 12 — We have received the Spirit of God
“Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit which is of God…”
Why? “that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God.”
This phrase is extremely important. The Spirit helps believers recognize what God has already given them through Christ.
For example: forgiveness, reconciliation with God, adoption, righteousness in Christ, Eternal life, Spiritual gifts, access to God, and ultimately resurrection and glory. Without Spiritual illumination, a person may read those words and understand their dictionary definitions while never grasping their Spiritual reality.
Verse 13 — Spiritual Truths taught by the Spirit
Paul says these Truths aren’t ultimately based upon: “the words which man’s wisdom teacheth” but upon what: “the Holy Ghost teacheth.”
Paul isn’t condemning education or careful thinking. He himself was highly educated. Instead, he is saying that human reasoning is not the ultimate source of Divine revelation.
There is an important order:
God reveals → the Spirit illuminates → the believer receives and understands.
Reason serves revelation; reason does not replace revelation.
Verse 14 — The natural man cannot receive it
This is the climax: “But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him…”
The “natural man” is the person operating only from ordinary human nature without the illuminating work of God’s Spirit.
Paul says Spiritual Truth can actually appear foolish to such a person. Think about Christianity’s central message:
God became man.
The King became a servant.
The innocent One died for the guilty.
Victory came through apparent defeat.
Life came through death.
The greatest become servants.
We gain our lives by surrendering them.
From purely worldly reasoning, much of this appears backward.
But Paul says: “neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.”
“Discerned” means more than intellectually recognizing the words. It means properly evaluating, perceiving, and grasping their Spiritual significance.
Paul is describing the difference between information and revelation.
You can know the words of Scripture intellectually while still missing their Spiritual significance. But when the Holy Spirit illuminates God’s Word, Scripture moves from merely being information before you to truth understood and embraced within you.
The progression:
God possesses Wisdom → God’s Wisdom was hidden → Christ revealed God’s plan → the Holy Spirit knows God’s depths → God gives us His Spirit → the Spirit reveals what God has given us → the Spiritual person can receive and discern it.
This passage references Jesus’ statement:
“When He, the Spirit of Truth, is come, he will guide you into all Truth.”
— John 16:13
We should ask:
“Holy Spirit, show me what FATHER is saying, give me understanding, and help me receive and live what You reveal.”
That is the heart of 1 Corinthians 2:7–14: Spiritual Truth originates with God, is revealed through His Spirit, and must ultimately be Spiritually discerned.
